Support Services at ECU

At such a transitional period in one’s life, starting university studies can be a challenging time for some. Whether it’s due to being in an unfamiliar environment, away from home, or unforeseen academic or personal problems, everyone can use a helping hand sometimes.

We offer a range of support services to help make your transition to university as seamless and stress-free as possible, and to assist with the development of a variety of academic and practical skills.

Student Counsellors

ECU’s counsellors have extensive experience, so you’re in very good hands. Whether it’s a problem you don’t feel like you can solve alone, or personal issues concerning settling in, accommodation difficulties, anxiety, family matters or homesickness, our counsellors are always available to chat. That’s because your health and wellbeing – physical, mental or emotional – always come first.

It’s important to note that counselling is not just for crises or serious issues. It’s a safe space for you to share your thoughts and emotions, seek out advice, or get a new perspective that can help clarify your concerns. We always encourage our students to reach out for support when they need it, which is why the service is free and fully confidential.

Study Support

There’s more to university than just grades, but it’s important not to let a simple study skill get in the way of reaching your academic potential. With study support, we’ll help you develop those skills that are essential to succeeding in university, and in life after it.

Through online tutorials, peer mentors and appointments with university staff, you can get all the help you need with:

  • Studying tips: If you’re a practical learner, you won’t benefit from using the same techniques as a visual learner. Everyone learns differently. Learn what works best for you and discover how study tips can help you reach your full potential.
  • Writing skills: Writing is an important aspect of university life, and of many career paths. Whether it’s to brush up on sentence structure or learn best practice for formulating a term paper, honing your writing skills will help you convey your ideas much more clearly.
  • Exam preparation: Exams can be stressful, but with the right preparation, you’ll be walking into the exam room full of confidence. Learn the best ways to review the information, revision and in-exam techniques to stay calm, and the best survival tactics for the all-important exam period. Practice on old exam papers to ensure you’ll be ready to perform at your best.
  • Time management and productivity: You know what they say – there just aren’t enough hours in a day. Between classes, assignments, exams and a social life to juggle, you may find yourself wondering how you’ll get it all done. With productivity hacks and time management advice, you can learn how to better organise your time and get the most out of every minute spent.
  • Other areas you can find assistance include (but are not limited to):
    • Best-practice note taking
    • Research, referencing and sourcing
    • Group work tips and collaboration tools
    • Critical thinking and questioning

English Language Support

If English isn’t your first language, we have additional support services that will help you thrive in an English-speaking environment. Build up your confidence through online English tutorials and in-person conversational workshops with your peers. Make valuable friendships while practicing with other students who are improving their own English language.
