A Game-Changing Australian Degree for the Media and Creative Industries

Edith Cowan University Sri Lanka marked a major milestone in higher education with the launch of its Bachelor of Communication degree at a vibrant event held at its Sri Lanka campus on November 4, 2025.

The launch ceremony brought together key convenors and course coordinators from ECU Australia and ECU Sri Lanka, alongside leading media professionals, academics, and creative industry leaders. The evening celebrated innovation, collaboration, and the growing importance of communication education in today’s fast-evolving digital landscape.

Speaking at the event, Professor Helen Klaebe, General Manager of ECU Sri Lanka, highlighted the program’s vision to nurture the next generation of storytellers and media leaders.

“This program is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in a dynamic communication landscape. We are proud to offer a degree that merges academic excellence with real-world experience right here in Sri Lanka,” she said.

The Bachelor of Communication is one of ECU’s most globally sought-after degrees, now made accessible to Sri Lankan students through ECU’s fourth direct international campus. The program provides the same Australian academic standards and qualifications offered in Perth, with the option for students to complete the full degree in Sri Lanka or transfer to Australia after the first year.

A key highlight of the evening was the unveiling of ECU Sri Lanka’s Podcast Studio, a cutting-edge facility designed for students to produce podcasts, interviews, and creative audio content. The studio reflects ECU’s hands-on approach to learning, offering students an opportunity to turn classroom knowledge into real-world experience.

“This studio will be a space where ideas come alive,” said Sunali Fernando, Convenor of Creative Humanities, ECU Sri Lanka. “Our goal is to give students the freedom to experiment, create, and communicate with confidence.”

The event drew representatives from top media networks, advertising and PR agencies, and creative organizations, many of whom described the new program as a “game-changer” for Sri Lanka’s communication education sector. Guests discussed emerging media trends, digital storytelling, and the importance of developing globally competent communication professionals.

The Bachelor of Communication offers students specializations in journalism, public relations, advertising, social media strategy, and digital content creation. It focuses on practical learning through industry engagement, real-world projects, and access to modern communication facilities like the newly launched Podcast Studio.

Graduates will receive a degree directly awarded by Edith Cowan University, Australia, ensuring global recognition and career opportunities in media, marketing, and creative industries.

The launch underscores ECU Sri Lanka’s growing contribution to international education in the region, combining global academic excellence with local accessibility.
