The Department of Humanities recently hosted a screening of A Beautiful Mind, followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion that brought together ECU students, especially from Psychology, Nursing and Human Biology to explore the film’s themes of mental illness, stigma, resilience, recovery, and human connection.
The discussion examined the portrayal of schizophrenia from multiple perspectives, highlighting the importance of understanding mental health beyond clinical labels. Students engaged in meaningful conversations about psychological wellbeing, patient care, the role of support systems, and the influence of media and communication in shaping public perceptions of mental illness.
A special thank you to our distinguished panelists:
· Kumudini Perera-David – Bachelor of Psychology
· Dinithi Samarakoon – Bachelor of Science (Nursing Studies)
· Sunali Fernando – Bachelor of Communication
The session was moderated by Sayumi Nanayakkara, a communication student, whose thoughtful facilitation encouraged insightful dialogue and active student participation.
Events such as these demonstrate the value of interdisciplinary learning, creating opportunities for students to connect theory with lived experiences and engage with complex social and healthcare issues from diverse professional perspectives.
